HELP PLEASE - Editing a Hyperlink in Word does not work!!!!!!!!!!

R

Robin Jackson

Please help

I have a very simple web page I use as a bookmark of my most used pages.

I am trying to edit a Hyperlink and it is just not working.

I copy the link I want (it starts HTTPS I hope this is not the problem) and
paste it into the link.

All looks fine.

If I hover over the link in Word the right link is there, if I click on the
link in Word the right page opens.

If I save the change both the above are still true HOWEVER when I load the
web page all reference to the initial site info is missing and the https
reference has been changed to a file reference.

I have not got a clue what the hell is going wrong.

Can anyone PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!

Cheers.

BUGGER.

Don't suppose you know of a REALLY EASY to use and CHEAP web page editor?

Ideally that allows you to work in a graphical rather than html view?

I was using something under OS 9 but now I am on a MacBook Pro this solution
no longer works and I am stymied.

I really thought Word was going to work for me but not if it does not
support https links. :(

Try the free open source web editor Nvu, it has a WYSIWYG and an HTML mode.

If you want to prevent the problem of the %20 inserted in a link write
it like you have to on a PC use the underscore in place of a space.
Windows is too dumb to figure what a space is for in HTML so don't use
them.

Phillip:

You're about 20 years out of date again :)

Why do you keep repeating this stuff without checking it? :)

Windows and Mac OS X are both entirely happy with spaces in URLs. The
"better" HTML applications will encode them as %20 in URLs, which is a
preferred practice in some parts of the Internet. And they will compress
multiple spaces into one space, as required by the HTML standards.

But both Mac and Windows will cheerfully handle spaces without users doing
anything special. Trust me, if you need a space and you use an underscore,
the thing won't work AT ALL. Anywhere.

Cheers

Actually the information was received form a Website design firm who is
working to redesign our Website. Ossinging Guild Design. One of the
things he said was get rid of all spaces and convert to underscores and
never use capitalization anywhere in a web url. I asked why and he said
Windows has a hard time with spaces and capitals in a URL.

When he gets time to rework it all files will have underscores and no caps.

Actually underscore work well for spaces. so long as all the linked
files names are written the same. The links in a Page have to be written
exactly the same as the title of the file to be linked.

When I first started maintain our association website. I had a problem
with many broken links. However; when I first statrted I used a design
application you had to type everything in you couldn't browse and link.

Now That I use DreamWeaver its is to link files. But people have
ocassional problems if spaces are in the link. So Now I use underscores
as space replacement and I am having less problems.

John McGhie [MVP - Word and Word Macintosh]

Hi Phillip:

Well, he's a bit behind the times :)

This is *my* understanding of the current situation:

"Windows" doesn't care (any more than OS X does) because neither operating
system ever sees a URL :)

Various browsers DO care about case, however. To be "correct", all URLs
should be considered to be case-specific. Various flavours of Internet
Explorer have a bug that means they do not distinguish the case of letters
in a URL.

While this may be "convenient" for newbie web-coders, it is in fact *wrong*
and will cause their sites to fail in compliant browsers. Later versions of
IE have fixed this, I believe.

Spaces can be used in URLs. Always could be. They're valid characters.
However, in the BODY of an HTML document, two or more spaces should be
treated as and rendered as *one* space. This rule does NOT apply to URLs.

However, to remove confusion for non-compliant browsers, many people took to
specifying underscores in place of spaces. That's in fact an old DOS file
name technique. In DOS file names, spaces were not allowed: so people took
to using underscores. However, in Windows, Unix (and Mac OS) underscores
have specific meaning in file names. Unless you want that meaning, it's
best not to use them in file names either.

And for end users, particularly those who came to computing since long file
names appeared on the Mac, putting underscores in either URLs or file names
confuses them, so it's best to avoid the practice these days.

Cheers
