Help, Please - "Notes" Document Won't Open

Dave Wyman

Help, please.

I've got my daughter's (unbacked up) Word document with her class notes,
which she created in the "notes" view, and it won't open. She e-mailed
me a copy and I've tried without success.

She created the document with Word (Office 2004). I'm using the same
version of Word.

When I click on it, there is a message that the document is either "busy
or "might not be" an MS Word file. It is. Get Info shows it has 192 kb
and shows it as an ms word document.

I have tried the "Recover Text from Any File" from the Open dialog box.
I tried to use Appleworks, and Text edit. No go.

Any ideas? (Besides "always backup your files? My daughter just hasn't
figured this out, yet. Maybe this will do it.) Is there software, free,
or commercial, for Word on a Macintosh? Or some trick I haven't tried?

Thanks,

Dave

If Recover Text from any file hasn't worked, I'm not optimistic, but
I've had a fair amount of success opening corrupted files with OpenOffice

http://OpenOffice.org

which runs on Apple's X11 X Window environmment

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/x11/

WinXL2003 also has advanced capabilities in recovering corrupted docs.

Dave:

Flip that thing to my email. I have some tools here that might get it open.

Put the password DaveV_mtd.458174$wV.320508 in the subject line of your
message so it makes it through my firewall.

The problem is that "Notes" view is not, technically, a "View". As so
succinctly pointed out by Matt Neuberg on his TidBITS site, it's "not" a
Word Document, it's a different kind of thing.

Cheers
