Help Please/Port 80 issue

B

BridgeNoid

I have long used Front Page 2002 to edit our school's web page. I took it
off and reinstalled it not too long ago as I thought it would fix a problem.
Now, when I click on the edit button while at our school's web page I get the
following box:

"Could not find a web server at 'schoolsname.org' on port 80. Please check
to make sure that the web server is valid and your proxy settings are set
correctly. If you are sur that everything is correct, the web server may be
temporarily out of service."

I believe from what I've read online that there may be something that got
left in my registry that is saying that port 80 is already in use...so now I
can't edit.

Does anyone know how to fix this please?

If you're trying to open your local copy of the web, it sounds like your server is not running - turn it on.

This would be if you're opening your web like this: http://localhost/schoolsname (no extension)

If you're using a disc-based web (no server) on your local machine you'd open your web like:
C:\\blahblah\My Webs\schoolsname (or whatever you are calling it on your hd)

Thanks for trying, but that's not the problem... I've always just click on
the editor button at the top, but even when I try typing in the name of the
web page I get the same error message. I've contacted the ISP that hosts our
web page and the FrontPage extensions are turned on and everything's OK on
their end... so it's something conflicting... I think that the port is
reading that something else is using it so I can't traffic through it, but
don't know why..... oddly enough, when I click on WORD as the editor, I do
see the pop-up that has me enter my user name and password for the ISP....
weird, and very frustrating.

How about a firewall?

Yes, do have one. But I disabled it to try and still get the same
message...and the fact that it works with Microsoft Word and not FrontPage
leads me to believe it's a registry issue.... I hate the fact that I'll
probably have to call Microsoft and spend $35.00 for them to fix something
they are responsible for..... ah well...thanks for the effort.

R

Rob Giordano \(Crash Gordon®\)

port 80 is also what your web browser uses, and what fp uses to publish via the http:// method

have you tried the usual stuff..dumping temp files, internet cache, also maybe Steve Eastons FP utility? http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm

Yes, did all those things except the 95isalive site... because I'm using 2002
I hesitate to use that...

thank you

That's the odd thing... I can access the web page, I've checked with my ISP
and they say the FrontPage extensions are on and OK... the proxy settings are
OK and the editor function works if I use Word instead of FrontPage...but
when I try to use FrontPage to edit my web page I get the error message that
references port 80... in another problem I read that it could be something
left in my registry when I took off and reinstalled FrontPage...but can't
find out if that is correct or what to do about it.

If you can get to it in IE use File Edit w/ FP
- if you get an error you have a Firewall blocking FP
(or some other service like Yahoo messenger stealing port 80)

Whether I click on the FP icon in the menu, or use File, Edit with Front
Page, I get the same result. I would agree with you except, I CAN edit using
Word...which means somehow Word is able to transfer my web page but FrontPage
is not...that is why I thought it might be something in the registry that got
left behind when I took off and reinstalled FrontPage.... however, I'm now
finding that my clipart functions in Word do not work so I may have some
other kind of conflict. I've already tried disabling my Firewall and I get
the same results... is a puzzle!!!

You were right...but I was too dumb to fix it so called Microsoft and paid
$35.00...it was worth it...the only problem was that when I reinstalled it, I
did not know it would be BLOCKED in my firewall and it was. After trying an
hours worth of other stuff the guy has me open the firewall list and
FrontPage was blocked.... what threw me was, it blocked even when the
firewall was disabled so I did not continue thinking along those lines....
once unblocked, everything worked fine, of course.

B

BridgeNoic

Wanted you to know it's fixed!!! It was the firewall all along... even when
disabled, it was blocking...all I had to do was go into the list of programs
and give it access.... a big DUH on my part...
