Any idea what causes this?

I received a powerpoint presentation from a colleague. On the first slide
there is a picture that I can't see on my Mac (Tiger, Office 2004). I only
see a grey rectangle.

I couldn't send the slide itself (refused by the server).

When I send it back to my Windows colleague, the picture appears.

Thanks,

Denis

I have the whole Office 2004 installed, last updates all done; not a 30
trial.

Tks,

Hello again,

I checked the file with an other Mac running 10.3.9 and Office Vx (instead
of 2004). The picture appears as a rectangle with a red "X" in it.

Any idea what I can do to fix this.

Thanks,

Denis

Jim,

Here is more info.

Just got the info from my Windows colleague. The pictures were inserted
using "Insert... Picture....From file..." command. Picture is a JPEG. It
should not be a problem then. He is using Office 2003.

He sent me the images; they are JPEG, but large (high rez, approx +1MB). I
can open them with Preview, but if try to insert them with PPT using the
same "Insert picture from file",... I still get a black square!

But that's not all... If I open the images with Graphic Converter and save
them in PNG, I can now insert them in PPT and all is fine (but if I save
them in JPEG format from GC, I still get the "square"... Something wrong
with my Powerpoint?

Moreover...

The original JPEG images were saved with CMYK color profiles (probably
produced with Illustrator). If I save them in JPEG 2000 format (extension is
JP2) using GC, I get a JPEG image that I can insert fine in Powerpoint. I
think (but I'm not sure) that it could be a case of Powerpoint not being
able to use JPEG files with CMYK color profiles.

Does that make sense?
Any "cure"?

Denis

Hello Denis,

Can you please post or email me (remove the online. after the @ sign) one of
these problematic JPEGs? Also, can you give some simple repro steps like
the following?
1) Start PowerPoint for Windows version xx.x SPy
2) Create a blank presentation
3) Insert Picture > From File
....
4) Open presentation on Mac PowerPoint version zz.z
etc.

The above would really help w/my investigation.

Also, in the future, it's best to start a new thread w/a title which
describes the issue. The original poster had some problem launching
PowerPoint.
