HELP!-Prob wth Hyperlinks Using PPT '03 to Open a PPT '07 Presenta

P

PMB450

I'm grateful for anyone's help ASAP as I have to give this presentation in 2
days and I am trying to avoid purchasing Office 2007.

I have PPT (Office) 2003. I downloaded the Compatibility Pack from
Microsoft in order to open PPT (Office) 2007 files. It seems to work fine
all except for the hyperlinks. I'm a PPT advanced user, so I totally
understand how hyperlinks work.

Here's the situation. I have 12 text boxes on a particular slide. Each
text box contains a line of text, and that text is hyperlinked to another
slide within the presentation. Each of the 12 text boxes is pointed
(hyperlinked) to a DIFFERENT slide within the deck - or that's how it should
work. What happens is that 11 of the the 12 boxes hyperlink to the SAME
slide within the deck, even though the hyperlinks of these 11 text boxes are
all different. (FYI - all hyperlinks I am referring to are pointed to slides
within the PPT deck). So...that means that 1 of my 12 hyperlinks works
correctly, but the other 11 all point to the SAME slide, regardless of how
the hyperlink field reads.

Just to speed things up, there is no text in the "Summary" field of the file
properties box and there is no comma in the slide name that I am trying to
point the hyperlink to. I have edited the hyperlinks, removed them and
re-added them, removed the slides and rebuilt them and added the correct
hyperlink back. I have tried saving the 2007 PPT back to 2003, I've tried
saving as .PPS - everything - and nothing seems to fix the problem.

Does anyone know of hyperlink issues between PPT 2003 & PPT 2007 when using
the compatibility pack? How can I fix this.

I think it's a bug:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926953/en-us

But you're working in 2003 -- you should be able to save as a PPT file (not
PPTX) and recreate the hyperlinks. I can't think of why that wouldn't work.

Are you linking to the slides directly, or are you linking to "first slide,"
"next slide," etc., as the KB article mentions?

P

PMB450

Thanks for the reply, Echo, but that does not work.

I had already done a 'save as' and saved as a .PPT presentation. When I did
that, the first thing I did was go and completely remove one of the links
that wasn't working so that I could re-type it in and try it again. After I
deleted the hyperlink, I saved the document and then put it in presentation
mode to test. EVEN WITH THE LINK COMPLETELY REMOVED, in presentation mode,
it still thinks a link is there, and when clicked, goes back to the same
INCORRECT slide that it was pointed to before I deleted it. WTF?

BTW - I am pointing to the slide hyperlinks directly, not choosing from the
"first slide" etc list.

Wanna try again?.................

Yeah, but as I mentioned, you should be able to delete / recreate the
hyperlink in PPT 2003 without issue.

As you explained, you've tried that, though, and it doesn't work.

PPT 2003 does have a hyperlink limit. Does your file have lots of links?

I think you said your slide has 12 boxes with links. What if, in PPT 2003,
you recreate one of the boxes and add the link -- does that work?

Oh!

Are your boxes grouped objects in 2003? I had this happen once. I made
"buttons" in PPT 2007 because I could easily add a nice bevel there. Then I
typed in the beveled rectangles to add text. Then I added a link to the
"button."

When I saved as 2003 file format (or opened in 2003), those buttons became
grouped objects -- it's PPT trying to be helpful. It split my one-object
into two objects (an autoshape and a textbox) so I'd be able to edit the
text. But it deleted my links -- I don't think you can link to grouped
objects in 2003. I had to go back to 2007, paste special the buttons as
pictures and re-add the links. That worked.

But that still wouldn't explain why you can't recreate the links in 2003
now. Bizarre.

Echo - IT WORKED!! That is, my 12 text boxes that I spoke of are actually
'buttons' as you described in your last thread. I had noticed early on in
trouble shooting that all of the objects used to create each button had been
'Grouped' by whomever created the presentation but I really didn't think
anything of it, as I had never run across a Grouped Object/Hyperlink issue
when using PPT 2003 alone.

However, it seems that an issue with Grouped Objects and Hyperlinks WILL
occur when using PPT 2003 + the Compatibility Pack to play PPT 2007 slide
shows. I went in an saved a 'fresh' copy of one of the .PPTX docs as a
regular .PPT. Then, I 'Ungrouped' all of the objects on one of the buttons
and tried the hyperlink in 'Presentation' mode. IT WORKED! I didn't even
have to change it or re-add it or anything. All I needed to do was Ungroup
the objects that were used to create the button. I ungrouped the other 11
buttons, put the deck in 'Presentation' mode, tested it all and everything
worked beautifully, just as it was intended.

THANKS for your assistance with this!!! I guess eventually I'm going to
have to break down and buy Office 2007. I just don't particularly like it,
and want to hold on to 2003 for as long as I can.

Many thanks again!!

Ah, that's great. It's good to know that just ungrouping will work -- at
least sometimes! (I don't think it did for me, but heck, maybe I didn't even
try it. I can't remember that far back, lol!) Thanks for getting back with
us.
