HELP!-Problems with Entourage 2004 and Exchange Server

I've racked my brain on this one, and
can't figure out the answer, so PLEASE HELP
Exchange server savvy gurus:

I have a new Mac User, who is running
Panther ( 10.3.9) and Office 2004.
We're using Entourage 2004 for our email, on this machine.
We have a total of 55 macs, and the other 54 accesses the Exchange server
For mail by using Entourage X, through POP/SMTP.

Mail Server is Exchange 5.5 Server.

ok, create new account with the following
for Exchange Server, authenticating through Active Directory:

Display Email Name: Jos Route
Active Directory ID: Jos Route
Exchange Account ID (mailbox): josr
Password: *****

I put into Entourage the settings for the POP/SMTP,
as well as the Account ID
and the Password.

Go to check mail, mail returns: "unknown user account and password
please re-enter".

I have wiped it out and re-created the settings four times,
and only once did I get it close enough to work,
And that was when I changed all the following to match:
Display Email Name: josr
Active Directory ID: josr
Exchange Account ID (mailbox): josr
Password: *****

And then it gave me an "Access Denied" error to the mailbox.

I tried going through Webmail Interface to the Exchange Server,
And I get OWA errors when it tries to authenticate.

all my other mac users report
no problems ( 54 users). What am i missing?
I got a feeling it's something simple, but
I don't know what. Last bit of info:
All my other mac users are legacy users,
Having been established since our earliest days of using
Exchange Server 2000. This problem hasn't really encountered
Until moving to Exchange Server 5.5.

OK, Thanks for replying Barry.
Now, I just tried to access these same accounts from
Microsoft Entourage for Mac X ( the 54 that are working)
And they get the following error when I try to access the mailbox:

"Access denied. Invaild Name and Password. Would you like to re-enter?"

Theses accounts are working, this one particular machine the owner can
access her mail fine. I switch Identity to create the new user accessing
via
POP/SMTP, and when I try to login and get mail, I get the above error.

All POP/SMTP services are set and matched to the working clients.

Could it be LDAP even if it is POP3?

The accounts should be set up under the "Mail" tab, not the "Exchange" tab
in the Tools > Accounts dialog. Accounts in the "Exchange" tab will not
work with Exchange Server 5.5 in any version of Entourage.

If you're still having problems, try entering the Account ID in the mail
account settings in the format "domain\username" without the quotes,
replacing the domain and username with the appropriate information.
