Help problems with "show me" in office assistant

Problem in Word & Excel. Recently reinstalled Office 2000 with all updates in
new XP PC, no problems previously in Windows 98SE.

When using help pages (via office assistant) and "show me" is selected the
following message appears

“Help can’t show you this procedure because the security setting in your
browser is set too high or the ActiveX control Ouactrl.ocx didn’t install
correctly.

-select a lower security setting in your browser
-If you receive this message after selecting a lower security setting,
please see your system administrator for help troubleshooting the
installation of the ActiveX control Ouactrl.ocx located in in the folder you
installed Microsoft Office to.â€

Q1. How do I access & lower security setting in my browser, and if I do am I
opening my PC to a higher risk.

Q2. Have no idea about trouble shooting ActiveX control...

Any Ideas please?

Hi Pete,

MS disabled the Ouactrl.ocx, Active X control in Office 2000 for security reasons by replacing the original one that worked that one
that basically does nothing. This change disabled the 'show me' feature in MS Office help (which uses Internet Explorer's engine to
show help.

You may be able to remove the error message with the procedure here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/263647/en-us?FR=1
but that usually doesn't help with the Showme feature.

You can replace the updated ouactrl.ocx, at your risk, from the original CD by using the procedure here to track down which one is
the updated one and copying the older one from the CD to take it's place.
Additional updating or repairing Office 2000 again will often replace that with the new file.

Thanks for your reply

Have twice tried to "repair" as per the link you attached but with no
success. Also the dialogue box's were different to access repair than the
script decribed!

The attempted repair basically reinstalled Office 2000 from the original
disk, does this mean that all my updates from the MS web site are no longer
in place?

Do you know what security risk existed prior to MS disabling the Active X
control and what risk would I be taking by following your last para?

In you last para refer to "using the procedure here ...". not sure what
procedure you are refering to, can you please elaborate.

By the way some other links in the help pages come up with the same message.

Repairing Office 2000 doesn't remove cached and installed Office updates.

MS usually doesn't elaborate on details of possible security holes they address. In Office XP (2002) they used a different process
and method for getting to 'show me' articles and help than they used in Office 2000.

Hi Pete,

As mentioned, to restore the older version (and the showme) in help files you have to replace the correct copy of version 2.0 (the
one pointed at in the registry) with the one on your CD.

It shouldn't generally affect any other operation. It is possible that in the years since that first occured that there have been
Windows/IE security updates that will keep that feature disabled in any case.

Y'All

I'm encountering the same problem on 2 seperate XP machines.
On a desktop, I did the suggested Repair and that produced the same results.
On a laptop, I uninstalled, re-booted, and re-installed Ofc2K. After
rebooting, but before applying any Office Patches (SR1, SP3, etc), the same
problem occurs.
Thought #1 - We are running Symantec Anti Virus Corporate Edition 9.03 /
Client Security 2.2.x. I can't "lower my shields" any lower than Medium
(under the Internet Control Panel settings) for General Internet.
Thought #2 - Is the "problem" caused by a Windows XP security patch? Which
one is the culprit?
Thought #3 - Is this a problem I REALLY need to contend with?
Thought #4 - Is the solution Open Office?

Hi Barb,

An early Office 2000 update disabled the OUactrl.ocx activeX control for security reasons. That control ran the 'show me' parts of
help. Office XP/2002 used a different help system.

You can reenable, at your risk, the Office 2000 control by reversing the procedure in this article to put back the original one
from the Office 2000 installation CD

Hi to all,
I have the same problem with my Office 2000 'Show Me' not working. I have
the version 2 of the Activex control, having followed the MS advice to check
which version you have loaded. My OS is XP professional. I have spent hours
trying to sort the 'Show Me' function. From what I have read here, is it
correct to say you can't get it to work unless you put your system at a high
risk of a security breach.
Just forget it or upgrade to the 2007 version.
