Help re-link categories to incoming mail

Further to previous post I am using 2004.
I have all of my address list linked to color -co-ordinated categories.
All incoming mail used to come in the colour I specified.
It no longer does, all mail is black.

I have trashed older identities.
I have checked and re checked preferences.
I have rebuilt database. Size 1.79GB
I have an older database in the main identity file. Size 2.94GB.

Any help would be apprecaited.

See if the checkbox next to "Automatically match message categories to
senders' categories" in Entourage's preferences (Entourage>Preferences,
Address Book section) is still ticked.
