help recovering changes to document in MSWord on a Mac

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

Just recently purchased MacBook Pro with Microsoft Office that comes with MS Word.

I was updating a document and when closing I accidentally hit the don't save button and the changes for several hours of work are gone.

I had not set up AutoRecovery at that time due to being new to the MAC but I am hoping that the document in an older version is recoverable.

I think there is no quick fix but hoping to avoid having to redo all that work.

Any reliable and useful solution would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance for same.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but it's gone forever.

1) If you set "Always make backup copy" in your preferences, Word saves a
backup copy of the file, current to the time of your previous save (in other
words, the backup is always one save behind the current version).

2) If you also set "Save Auto Recovery every 10 minutes" then Word saves
only the DIFFERENCES between the current version and the previous save.

Auto Recovery is basically useless: if the original file gets damaged, or if
you have never saved, or if you quit Word without saving, there is no
original file to record changes from. If you quit without saving, Word
simply deletes the Auto Recovery file. Either way, Auto Recovery is no use
at all.

Auto Recovery will only rescue a file if Word crashes: it will not operate
to protect you from "failure to save". Useless... :)

Please use Help>Send Feedback to tell Microsoft about this bug. We cannot
get this changed unless enough of you complain about it!

Sorry

Aside from John's excellent advice on file management: For what it's worth,
I always keep my mouse away from the "Do you want to save?" dialogue box. I
hit the Return key for "Save" (all default/coloured buttons respond that way
on the Mac) or type "d" to trigger "Don't save". To trigger "Cancel" I type
a full stop while holding down the Command key, i.e. Command-[period] --
which is also a standard Mac keyboard shortcut for cancelling an operation.
