HELP! Repagination in word:mac print layout view

Hello,

I have just bought the latest mac mini (1.83ghz / 512k RMA) plus
office:mac and am having problems when working on my masters
dissertation document (currently 50plus pages with graphics/text
boxes/cross references/foot notes etc.)

I've read about 'word does not know what a page is'...

My problem:

When viewing the document in Print Layout View, every time I move the
slider up or down on the right hand side word repaginates the document.
This means I can't actually work with it in this view as it atakes a
few seconds each time.

Is this normal? My PC (750Mhz Athlon / 312k RAM) didn't behave like
this. The document was created on this PC.

Do I just need more memory?

Hello -

Congrats on your new Mini & welcome to the group!

I don't think there's any question that more memory is going to improve
performance - IMHO, anything OS X really need at least 1 gig to be happy
(more is even better), and Office is no exception. This is especially true
with the Mini because it has only a 64 MB graphics processor & requires
sharing system RAM as per Apple's literature:

"Minimum graphics memory usage is 80MB, resulting in 432MB of system memory
available." [note the term "minimum"]

That, alone, may rectify the behavior. Try it as the first step & if you
still experience any difficulties please don't hesitate to post back...
There are a few here that are well-versed in Word on both the Bright & Dark
Side :)

Thanks for the response, but I'm hoping for something which doesn't
involve spending even more money!

Surely word doesn't need to repaginate every time the document moves -
of does it.

Hi Chris,

Yes, in Print Layout view Word does need to repaginate every time the
document moves--otherwise it can't show you something close to what the
document will look like printed. Use Normal view if you don't care about
the pages--or a poster suggested that using Online Layout view might be a
substitute, depending on the setup of your document.

However, jumping around the document might be faster than moving the
slider--Word doesn't have to repaginate every single page that passes, then.
Try some of these navigation options instead. Edit | Go To, Outline View,
Document Map, and Browse Object.

More info on some of those here:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/UsingOLView.htm
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/documentmap/index.html
http://daiya.mvps.org/browseobject.htm

Is the repagination accurate? excessive repagination into the thousands is a
sign of corruption, but it doesn't sound like that's your problem.

2GB RAM here, powerbook with OS 10.4.8. I open a 374 page document, jump it
to the end to force it to repaginate entirely (the first time does cause a
pause), then I am able to move the slider down fine, without pauses.
