Help..."Save as" disabled...

M

Max Cady

I have a very perplexing problem: When I'm using Word (as part of Office
2000) it no longer gives me the option of "Save as..." from the File menu, or
the choice of "Symbol" from the Insert menu....

There are probably other choices missing too, but I haven't checked it
out. Does anybody have any idea why this is happening or how to fix it?

Thanks in advance,

mc

FWIW, a usual cause of missing menu commands is the Ctrl+Alt+[minus sign]
keystroke. Often, usually while searching for one of the various hyphen or
dash characters, someone will press Ctrl+Alt+- (between 0 and = on the top
row). This accesses the ToolsCustomizeRemoveMenuShortcut command. The
pointer turns into a large minus sign, and the next menu command you choose
is automatically removed from the menu.

It happens so quickly and quietly that most users don't even notice until
certain commands (often the Symbol command, as it turns out) turn up missing
in action. Awareness that Ctrl+Alt+- does this can help prevent such
accidents in the future.
