HELP: section breaks & pg #s: NO #s for 1st sec., Roman for 2nd, Araibic for 3rd

HI

I would like to format a three section MS Word 2000
document with no page numbers for the first section,
Roman numberal page numbers for the second section
starting at IX, and Arabic numberals for the third
section starting at 1 just like you'd see in a book.

I am familiar with section breaks, headers, footers,
etc. I just can't seem to get this to work no matter
what I try and I've been spending 2.5 hours on it. Ya
think MS would make it easy to format a simple standard
book on Word.

Thank you

This addresses the "front matter" of a book and the
remainder of the book very well, but I didn't see in it
anywhere on how to have no numbering for section 1, and
then numbering for the remaining 2 sections. I got my
section 2 starting at IX and my section 3 starting at 1
but section 1 starts at IX too and when I try to delete
the numbering, it removes it from the entire document.

Thank you for your reply

Hi, Bis,

In Suzanne's article, see Step 2, items 2 and 3, to see how to restart
the numbering of a section. You can do this in any section, and in
more than one section per document, if you want. Each section can
start over at 1, or can start at any other number.

In section 1, just don't put any page-number field in the header or
footer. The section's pages will *have* numbers, but that doesn't mean
you have to *show* the numbers!

I don't think you read the page properly, or you didn't finish reading it.
It states clearly that you have to unlink the sections in order to have
different footers. You need to turn off Same As Previous for Section 2.

Glory to God I figured it out! Here is how you have a 3
section document on Word 2000 and have no numbers in
section 1, roman starting at other than 1 in section 2,
and arabic starting at 1 in section 3. This is a
standard book format with a potion of unnumbered front
matter.

1. divide doc into 3 sections
2. remove same as previous from first AND second footer
in each section
3. on h/f toolbar, format page numbers
4. on h/f toolbar insert page numbers in 1st footer first
and then second too
5. repete for the 2 sections ya want numbered
6. you'll notice that the page numbers are not centered.
in h/f view, select first footer page number, go to
insert page numbers on tools menu, and select center and
click ok.
7. do this for the second footer of each section. Once
ya do this for the second footer, the remaining page
numbers should be centered.

Notes: it seems there's this funny thing about having to
format the first AND second footer in each section to get
it tha way ya want. Note two: I only did this once and
haven't tested it, relying only on memory, so these
instructions may not be accurate and you'll have to tweak
them. Note 3: before you start working on a huge
document, have a backup copy so ya can just reload that
when too many tweaks makes things screwy, so you can have
a fresh start.

Good luck authors with word 2000!

Glad you figured it out. I should also have called your direct attention to
this article (there was a link to it in the Front Matter page, as well),
which spells a lot of information out clearly and should help you
internalize what you have just worked out:

http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Numbering/PageNumbering.htm

I think your system does have some extra steps, but one of the things about
Word is that there are often a few different ways to get to where you want
to go. Experimenting on a test copy is always a good idea. The developers
don't have much familiarity with the type of book that has roman numeral
front matter (so far as I can tell) so Section format isn't that
intuitive....

If you are combining page numbers inserted directly in the header/footer and
ones inserted using Insert | Page Numbers, you will come to grief. In a
document of this complexity, you want to avoid the Insert | Page Numbers
dialog like the plague. In order to center page numbers in the footer, you
use either the default center tab or paragraph formatting (Ctrl+E). If I'm
not mistaken, that's also spelled out in my article (Step 2, #5).
