Help! shared global template issue

M

Mike

Hi,

In our organisation the global template is located on a
network share and a shortcut to this template exists in
everyone's Wordstartup folder on their C drive.

This works fine except when the global template needs
updating. When I right-click and choose open I
see "(read only)" appears in the title bar. On closer
inspection it appears the template is in use by some
users (as they have Microsoft Word open)

How can I get round this problem as I want to be able to
update and amend our global template throughout the day
without having to get all our users to close Word?

Cheers

Hi Mike,

Short answer is you can't.

I would always recommend templates & addins being stored on each user's
local disk, for the following reasons

1. If the network goes down, enough operations will grind to a halt without
unnecessarily adding word-porcessing to the list.

2. If a user manages to corrupt the template any reason, only one user is
affected and the template is easily replaced.

3. There are a variety of ways of getting an update reliably distributed
within a company (e.g. logon scripts, SBS)

For more on distributing macros, take a look here

Ah,

Brilliant. Thanks very much for the advice and link. I
think I'll go for the option to copy the latest global to
their C: drive using login scripts.

Cheers

Mike.
