help- sluggish respond in word 2004 after installing the service pack

after installing the word 2004 Service Pack 1, there is a significant
lag between the typing and the response of the characters typed
showing up on word. This problem is espcially bad when i attempt to
delete characters by using the delete key (backspace) and retype the
word. there will be a 2 sec delay in the deleting and another 2 sec
delay before the characters being type appear on screen.

The thing that annoys me most was that before the installation of the
service pack, i was quite satisfied with it and i actually thought
that maybe microsoft have done it right this time...

This is simply unacceptable for a modern wordprocessor! Am i the only
one suffeering from this? is there anything i can do to remedy this
situation?

Yeah....this is a known, but semi-intermittent, issue--they changed the way
the screen refresh works, and now showing the cursor takes priority over
making the screen reflect the formatting changes. It isn't exactly the
fault of Service Pack 1--many people had the problem before installing the
update, and I still don't have it after installing the update.

There is more information and a neat trick to reduce the annoyance on this
group under the thread "Macro Speeds up Mac Word 2004", in mid October, use

I had this problem too. Word slowed right down not just when updating
formatting, but also when typing characters. For all I know this is
just Voodoo - I'm not sure if it's a font problem or a preferences
problem.

But I did manage to solve it:

I checked font book and noticed duplicate fonts. So I quit Word, used
fontbook to remove the duplicates, then trashed the MS Office
preferences except for "Office 11 First Run" and "Office Registration
Cache 11" in ~/library/preferences/Microsoft/

For good measure I logged out / logged back in again. When I started
Word again everything was back to normal speed, though I had to reset
some of my settings.

My guess is that if it really is a font problem, the only file you
need to get rid of in the preferences folder is the "Office Font Cache
(11)" I should have tried this first, but I was on a tight deadline,
and a little too panicky to experiment.
