When typing in a text box, I cannot include symbol font characters, they appear latin on screen. For example "mu" appears as plain vanilla "m"
Symbol font is available in MS WORD, and I can paste the character (in the UGLY light blue box - which shows in edit mode); and, I have to save that word file with symbol character (one file for every instance) that is just plain PITA.
Is there a way around it? Please help.

My guess is that what you're typing is the the first character in the box or
the first character of a "sentence". As a result, when you space or
"end-punctuate" AutoCorrect is converting the lower case mu to upper case,
which then is correctly displayed as the Latin M.

Either;

Key Cmd+Z (Undo) when the conversion occurs,
Use the AutoCorrect Options button that appears beneath the letter,
Select the character & use Format> Change Case> lowercase, or
Turn off the AutoCorrect feature for "Capitalize first letter of sentences".

There may be other options as well but any of those should work just fine.
