Help - Table row length changes

B

Brian Richards

I am using Word from within Office XP running under
Windows XP and am working on a form I created using
tables. I have to make changes by adding a couple rows to
represent new information on the form. The form is
designed to fit portrait style on an 8.5" x 11" page.
When I added new rows, the overall row width expanded till
it was about 12-14" wide instead of the approximately 8"
wide. As each row has a different number of cells, and of
different widths depending on the information contained
within the cells, I have had to individually correct each
row. I will get several rows re-aligned, be working on
another row, will finish all but the last cell, will grab
the right margin of the last cell and drag it into
alignment with the end of the previous row, and when I let
it go, the table expands out again like I didn't do
anything, and lose all the work I just did. I have done
this several times, with the same result, regardless of
which row I am working on. I have even tried cutting the
rows out of the table, pasting them into a blank area on
the document, making all the necessary corrections,
cutting them and trying to paste them back into the main
table in the appropriate place, and when I do, the whole
table expands out again. I am obviously very frustrated,
and bewildered as to what is causing this, and would
appreciate any assistance.

Thanks in advance. My email is

For a start, go to the Table tab of Table Properties, click Options and
clear the check box for "Automatically resize to fit contents."
