Only very few toolbars can actually be docked in Word 2008 (Standard,
Formatting, Tables and Borders, Reviewing and Contact); custom toolbars
cannot be docked, and neither can any other of Word's own toolbars. If you
want that to change, let Microsoft know by clicking on Help>Send Feedback on
Word.

The toolbars won't snap into place if you drag them; instead, you will need
to ctrl/right-click the main toolbar and choose Customise Toolbars and
Menus. In the new list that shows up, tick the boxes next to each toolbar's
name in the Dock column.

I do have the same problem, so in case you found a solution, I would be
happy to know about it. The customize toolbars menu works, but the docked
toolbars don't show...

Not only won't my toolbars dock [if by that you mean stay attached to the top of the Word document] but they have now all disappeared. They are checked to Show. I also checked the dock box in the customize menu. I looked in preferences but could find nothing. Is there any help out there?

Hi Susan -

A couple of general suggestions for future reference:

1- Don't submit a new inquiry as a*reply* to an existing thread - post as a
*new* message so your system & version specs get included. Without that
information it's often difficult to provide a prompt & accurate response.

2- If you do have reason to reply to another message be certain that your
comments don't get picked up as a part of those from another poster. That's
what happened here so your question appears quoted as a part of another
reply... Making it very tough to notice that there is even a new addition.

For your current issue: The Standard toolbar & any others that are docked in
the document window don't display if there is no document open. Just create
a new file or open an existing one & the toolbars will reappear within it.

If there is one open and you still don't see the docked toolbars click the
oval button at the right end of the document window's Title Bar... It's an
OS X contrivance that's quite handy for allowing more vertical viewing space
but it's undocumented & catches many of us by surprise at first:)

Thank you Bob Jones for the simple fix for my hidden toolbars in word. What a joy to have this solved.
By the way, by fooling around, I discovered that pressing Control f5 then command would return the toolbars to me--after i placed the cursor onto the document. But this is extremely awkward!! I like your oval button much better. thanks again Susan.
