HELP!! trying to number headings in 3 levels

E

Elhanan

hi...

i've been trying to get my heads arounds this:

in word 2000 i have a document with 3 headings styles all have bulltets
and numbers

heading 1 should be 1. heading 1
heading 2 should be 1.1 heading 2
heading 3 should be 1.1.1 heading 3

problem is that each time i try to mark a paragraph as heading 3,
number on that heading is reset, so i have

2 heading 1
2.1 heading 2
2.2 heading 2

heading 3 wil be

2.1.1 heading 3 or some other crap...

what's going on?

try this
Tools, Autocorrect, Autoformat as you type, Apply as you type,
uncheck "automatic bulleted lists"

think that will help, let me know!

what if you make a new list after you've unchecked that option?
i'm not sure it will change a table that's already there.

Place your cursor on Heading 1 text. Click on Format, Styles and
Formatting. Click on the Drop down arrow beside Heading 1 at top of
Styles and Formatting task pane. Click on Modify. Click on Format
button, click on Numbering, the Numbering and Bullets dialog will
appear. One of the squares on the outline numebring tab will be
selected. Leave it selected and click on the Customize button. There
is a list of numbers down the left hand side, click on number 3. The
numbering will be displayed in the Number Format text box to the right.
Click on the second number, delete it and from the drop down marked
Previous Level Number, choose Level 2. It will insert a number "1".
Click on Ok, Click on OK. The numbering should now be:

2 heading one
2.1 heading two
2.2 heading two
2.2.1 heading three
