Help Understanding and Using Office Clipboard

Word Help says that when more than one item is copied or cut from the same
application, the Office Clipboard will display in the Clipboard Pane
automatically.
Under Options I have checked Show Clipboard Automatically, But it does not
show even when I copy or cut many items from a document and when I paste
them I always get the most recent.
When I then open the Clipboard manually [Edit/Office Clipboard or Ctrl+cc] I
see only the most recent item, just as with the Windows 9x Clipboard.
However, once I have opened the Clipboard, then each successive item cut or
copied is placed in the Clipboard Pane ready for pasting.
I tried checking Collect Items without Showing Clipboard and I found that
when I did open it it included two unrecognizealble items, both apparently
"pictures" or placeholders which when double-clicked open the My Pictures
folder.
I also observed, after repeated testing, that no matter how many times I
closed and reopened Word, those items remained in the Clipboard.
Help says that the Clipboard will be cleared when all Office applications
are closed.
I'm really confused about all of this and wonder if something is wrong (or
maybe right) with the way Word and the Clipboard are working.
