Help understanding roll-up of multiple forms

I would like to produce a status report form that is similar
to the one discribed in this article:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/05/03/InsideMSDN/default.aspx

Ultimately, I want a form that people will send to their manager.
The manager will merge all the forms and be able to click on a
button to see an alternate view which is a rollup based on
project and subtask.

Several problems exist.
1) I'm new to Infopath. I have performed the tutorials online.
2) I don't have SharePoint
3) I want to modify the status report.
4) I can't figure out the merge.

There is another example in the Infopath SDK
Microsoft Office InfoPath 2003 SDK\Samples\MForms

I performed "File -> Extract Form Files..." to see what is going
on but am still a little lost.

If someone could provide an explaination I would appreciate it.
