HELP!!! Update checker fails!

M

MikeyD

I believe I am having the same problem. The update
checker says it is 30% complete and then it stops,
showing the same message you describe. I have no idea
why that is happening. I have Access from Office 2000
installed and Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint 2002
from XP for Students and Teachers installed. They are
installed on Drive D. I have never experienced any
problems with the Windows Update manager.

I was having the same problem - for the past few weeks. With the new web
page, the following happens:
1. The list of available products shows up now - but with a script error
with the following details:
Line: 381, Char: 1, Error: Object Expected, Code:0 URL:
http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/mainCatalog.aspx?CTT=98

2. On clicking on the "Start Installation" button, a script error pops up
briefly, and then I either get an invalid URL error, or am redirected to
your error reporting page at:
http://office.microsoft.com/home/office.aspx?assetid=FX010357071033

Please comment...
Thanks

It's likely that the Office Update client that has been cached on your
computer is corrupt. Try moving the 'C:\Program Files\OfficeUpdate' folder
to another temporary location, and then check to see if the Product Updates
detection works. This should download the Office Updates client cache
again.

I did some checking, and the latest update to OfficeUpdate changed the
location of the client files. Anyhow, try moving the 'C:\Program
Files\OfficeUpdate11' folder, and then try the detection again.

Also, are you still seeing the original script error? Or are you just
seeing a patch failure?

I did the following:
- removed the active-x control, opuc.dll
- cleared cookies, cache (including offline files) and history in IE
-deleted D:\Program Files\OfficeUpdate11 (in my case windows and apps are
installed to D:), and I had deleted both this one and P...F\OfficeUpdate
yesterday as well
-Emptied the recycle bin

On going to the office update site (which I have added to the "trusted
sites" in IE as well), the following happens:
-It correctly identifies the one patch I need (in this case KB826293, Access
Snapshot Viewer), and shows the "start installation" button. The script
error is still there (same as before).
---Line:381, Char:1, Error: Object Expected, Code:0, URL:
http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/mainCatalog.aspx?CTT=98

-When I click start installation, an error message pops up and goes away,
followed by an errror: The page cannot be displayed:
http://office.microsoft.com/home/office.aspx?assetid=FX010357071033 ;
Operation Aborted.

Oddly, I don't have the same problem at my work computer, which has an
almost identical software environment. I did find that a number of people
have been reporting the new error in the last couple of days
(FX010357071033).

Any help would be apprciated.

Some more questions. How is this machine connected to the internet? Have
you customized any of the cookies settings in the IE Security and Privacy
settings (in Tools:Internet Options)? Do you have the same problem if you
connect to http://tc5.iponet.net/OfficeUpdate?

The problem (in part) seems to be zone alarm.
I connect to the internet thru a router, and have zone alarm (firewall
software) installed. I have not made any special settings though, and in
the past had no trouble with the updates.

If I temporarily shutdown zone alarm, I can install the updates.

At the end of successfully completing the process though, I still get our
trusty old error:
The page cannot be displayed:
Thanks for your help though. I hope the others will try disabling their
firewall before going thru the entire process of cleaning out thier
registry, un-installing office etc (as suggested by another submitter to the
group)
