Help using a database to output different names in a field

Okay, I've been told there's a way to do this, but I don't know how:

I have a document that has a field for "name". I'd like the exact same
document to go to each person, but rather than change the "name" field 500
times, I've heard that I can use a feature of Word to automatically replace
that field with a different name according to my database each time.

Is this possible?

And is there a way to do it without specifically using a MS Access database?

Thanks!

Okay, that's what I was looking for, but I'm actually trying to do something
a bit different...

Basically, I want to print out the numbers 001 through 600 on areas the
sizes of business cards, maybe 7 or 8 per page. I haven't played around with
this much, but it looks like it's specifically for mailing things to people.
Is there a way to mess with the settings to be able to output a numerical
list like I want, or will I have to just input the numbers manually on each
document?
