Help: Using Office 2000 for Office XP files

What is the best way to use Office 2000 to read Office XP files without
corrupting them? This would be limited to Word and Excel files. Is there a
danger? Is there an add-on for this?

Background. My friends XP computer had a motherboard failure. I can lend
them a WinMe/Office 2000 computer. But WinMe can't read the format (NFTS) of
their harddrive, so I am using my XP computer to read their XP harddrive. I
don't have Office XP and their Office XP won't run on my computer so I can't
directly save the files in an older format.

Word and Excel 2000 can read and write .DOC and .XLS files created by
Word and Excel 2002. There are no material differences in the file
formats, and there should be no incompatibilities. The only thing that
might not LOOK the same are colored worksheet tabs in .XLS files -
Excel 2002 provides them but Excel 2000 doesn't.
