Help w/ Live Hotmail Connector: Old profiles in reinstalled MSO 20

A

a.k.a.

Hello everyone,

General background: Vista Ultimate x64 installation died, and I have to
straighten out how my old Outlook 2007 data will react when reconnecting the
PST in a fresh OS + Office 2007 installation.

Specific issue: I had MS Windows Live Hotmail Connector installed in my old
Outlook setup, and when it's not first uninstalled correctly (from within
Outlook, in addition to within Add/Remove Programs) the Connector is known to
create problems for Outlook.

In my situation, obviously I'm not able to uninstall WLHC correctly -- or at
all -- before reinstalling the PST.

Before I reinstall, I need help understanding exactly what I'm going to need
to do to get the reinstallation to accept my old PST.

1. If I reinstall Outlook 2007 and WLHC FIRST, and THEN replace the default
files with the old PST and WLHC profiles, I'll be OK, correct?

2. Where on my drive are the WLHC-specific profiles stored that I'll need to
have to replace the default WLHC profiles when I reinstall Outlook + WLHC?

3. Did the upgrade to WHLC 10.2 result in any incompatibilities with the old
WLHC profiles? I have the installer for the old WHLC version that I was still
using, but I want to know if I can just install the newest version and get
things rolling, rather than install->import->uninstall->install update.

The reason I am being very cautious here is that last time I didn't
"correctly" uninstall WLHC, I couldn't even get Outlook 2007 to OPEN.
(Outlook quit before opening, with this error:

QUOTE
1. The Add-in "Outlook Connector Extensions" (msncon32.dll) cannot be loaded
and has been disabled by Outlook. Please contact the Add-in manufacturer for
an update. If no update is available, please uninstall the Add-in.
2. Cannot open your default e-mail folders. An unexpected error has
occurred. MAPI was unable to load the information service msncon32.dll. Be
sure the service is correctly installed and configured.

I'm not quite sure what you are trying to do - just set up the connector or
set up the connector and reuse the pst file it created on the old machine.
And why do you need to uninstall it from a new setup?

AFAIK, you can't reuse the pst the connector created on the old system -
it's linked to the acct and computer. Profiles are stored in the registry
and support files are in the user path. See
http://www.outlook-tips.net/beginner/filepath.htm for file locations. I
would not recommend exporting your profile and moving it to the new setup -
with the problems you seem to have, I'd make a totally new profile and start
fresh.

Dear Diane,

I appreciate your taking time to reply.

I know the filepath for the PST and related files, but I don't know the
filepaths and registry settings associated with the connector. That's what I
need to document and work with.

I think I wasn't clear enough, given the volume of threads you're trying to
follow at once, at describing the predicament. If you look at the older
thread on this, you'll find out that the connector causes very serious
problems, thwarting any attempt to get Outlook STARTED at all, when the
original connector is no longer there -- and that could be due to any number
of possible contingencies, be it trying to get rid of it via Add/Remove
Programs, or because your system crashed and you can't get into Outlook
anynore but must reinstall.

Give it a try yourself by installing and then removing the connector from
Add/Remove Programs (without doing so in Outlook), and tell me whether
Outlook lets you open your PST file. If they've improved matters in 10.2,
that's great, but the older connector was what I had installed.

The problem is that I have a very important PST file that I need to hook up
to a fresh installation of Outlook -- but I have to find a way to make sure
that the PST file believes that the connector is there already when it opens.
(My sense is this isn't about "did I back things up, and if not, did I hose
myself." I recovered the PST file, but even if I'd "backed the PST file up" I
may still be in the same boat with the connector.)

Also, as you can probably tell now, the point isn't that I'm trying to
UNinstall the connector. I misspoke. I have to install the OLD connector so I
can get the PST to open, and then update to the newest one (10.2, I think).
It's probably an over-write to update to the latest version, not an
uninstall-update process.

Does that clear the reasons for my question up?

I'm trying to figure out whether there is any way of managing to open the
old PST despite a fresh setup of the connector, or alternately, whether it's
possible to reproduce all of the files and settings associated with the
earlier connector installation. (Maybe I can load the old registry hive and
look at the values.) If there is a way to do either of those, I may have luck
getting the PST to open without Outlook closing prematurely, as described in
the old thread.

The current Outlook Connector doesn't use a PST. It uses an OST just like
an Exchange account does. Moreover, you never need to reuse the Connector's
data store because accing an account with it will create a brand new store
which will contain the same data (which is still on the server) as the old
one.

You may, however, have another PST which would have been your delivery
location. This one should be easy to reuse from the Mail applet in Control
Panel.

Brian,

This is very good to know. Thanks for letting me know.

Just curious: Am I hearing silence on the subject of reintegrating the old
PST?

There's nothing to really wonder about. Just connect the old PST to
whatever profile you create using the Data Files button of the Mail applet
in Control Panel. Do not overwrite any existing PST of the same name. The
PST is completely independent of the Hotmail data store. I'd set your
profile up before you install the Hotmail Connector and make sure you can
reference the PST first. Then add the Hotmail Connector and set up your
account in that. You'll get a second set of folders created which reflect
your Hotmail folders.

Brian, thank you.
And my apologies for being dense and keeping you from more interesting
stuff, but could you clarify: Having not yet installed Office, I don't see a
Mail applet in Control Panel, unless 1) you're talking about an Outlook
control panel, or 2) you're talking about default programs. I even did a
search of the control panel contents and didn't turn anything up.

Installing Office (in particular, Outlook) will install the Mail applet.
