Help! W97 gone berserk!

Jack Crenshaw

We had a power outage the other day. Now the formatting (specifically,
bulleting) in my files has gone wonky. When I try to bulletize or
enumerate a paragraph, it bulletizes/enumerates every single line in the
file -- headings, Normal, blank lines, all styles, everything.

I tried to edit the Normal.dot file and found it to be corrupted. I
deleted it and created another one. Same thing is happening.

What am I doing wrong? I have a ton of existing files, which are all now
at risk. Please help. I'm using Office 97 on XP Pro.

P.S. At work one day, we had similar problems. Our MIS guy had me delete
my profile. That fixed the problem. Anyone know how to do that?

Thanks! It didn't fix the problem, but it sure gave me clues.

After unchecking Auto Update, everything seems to be working now EXCEPT
bullets. After clicking the bullet button, the undo entry says "Undo
Bullet Default." Clicking it does indeed undo all the bullets.

Also, if I select style List Bullet, that works Ok. It appears that
whatever is causing the problem, it's isolated to whatever macro is
invoked by clicking the bullet button.

The Bullet button (as well as the Numbering button) always applies the
most recent list format used. You can improve the situation by going into
Format | Bullets and Numbering and then Reset each of the predefined
formats, but the long-term solution is to make use of styles whenever
you are creating lists in Word (as you have noticed).

In Word 2007, the reset button disappeared. Instead, you have to delete the file
"ListGal.dat" somewhere on your harddrive...
