HELP - Winword.EXE error / Normal.dot

Help!

I am running Windows ME and have Word 2000.
I am continually getting the following error message:

"WinWord caused an error in WinWord.exe. WinWord will now
close."

I have no idea why this keeps happening. Also, I am
forever having to re-save my normal.dot file which I have
started numbering (normal.dot2, normal.dot3, etc.) because
I do not know what else to do. Until I resave it, I can't
close Word.

Please be so kind to provide detailed step-by-step
instructions as I am not very computer savvy.
