Help with appropriate chart

Working on homework assignment. Person performs a survey regarding
preference for two different t-shirt designs. The data collected includes
gender, preference, age, GPA, income and whether right or left-handed. There
are only two t-shirt designs, however, the preference numbers go from 1 to 5.
What type chart would I need to utilize that would show best results? Do I
have to determine the "mean" of any of the numbers?

What I use when evalute psychophysical experiments I use z-score evaluation.
I have this spreadsheet Psychophysical_lab.xls at
http://home.tiscali.cz/zviratko.
I would create 2 charts for each t-shirt and then on each I would put your
preferences (age,...) and then you can evaluate average from these two
charts as well. Hope this will help.

I would have thought that a "mode" average would be more meaningful (no
pun intended).

I'm sorry I was in rush so I described pair comparison evaluation rather
ranking one. I have never used ranking order but there is math similar
behaid it.
If you use mean or average for evaluation this can be misleading. It doesn't
describe the studied sample well. See example:

Two people's salary:
Example one:
2000 and 12 000
Average 7000

Example second
Both has 7000

When using mean you need to express the variability (or other
characteristics example min and max, 95percentile...). Otherwise the result
can be missleading.
In first case there will exist people who have lot of many and people who
are really poor. In second example both has the same. But if you just say
the average is 7000 you do not know the difference. See what I mean?
