Help with buttons and banners gone missing

Such a frustrating thing to happen but here it goes.

I just took over the website for my nonprofit organization. I do have some
knowledge of front page but am in no way an expert. You can see our current
website at www.wils.us. Scroll down a bit on the first page and click a
hyperlink. As you can see (or I'll describe if you didn't look) there is a
background, Buttons to navigate on the left, and a header and banner commen
to each page. When I down loaded the site and bring up the index.htm in
desgin mode all of these features disappear. I thought this was normal. I
made the changes, reuploaded, and sure enough the buttons, header and footer
are now missing. I did some tests and this is what I found.

If I download my website from the FTP and double click a page from the
folder, the buttons ect appear and work on the page. When I load that page
into design mode they are no longer there. And if I close Frontpage without
saving, and double click the page again from teh folder they have
dissappeared. They are saving automatically and I can not figure out how to
apply them. Is there a setting in Front Page that would cause this kind of
thing? Any questions just ask and thanks alot in advance.

Joel,
The site use borders, so you need to look at the files for these.

However, I forget what they are.
( I changed from borders to using include pages for my top and left banner
and menu)

Are the files _top.htm and _left.htm ?
And what folder are they in? It may be _borders.

Have a look for these. If not, another reader can help, I am sure.

The site uses a FrontPage theme, FrontPage navigation and shared
borders. If you use FTP to download the site, you may lose all of
these.
All of the site must be downloaded, including the _borders and _themes
folders. However the navigation will be lost.

However, the web site has FrontPage extensions - open the remote site
in FrontPage
File->Open Site (or Web) and make the location http://www.wils.us
Then publish down to a folder on your PC. HTTP publishing will retain
all the pages, intact.

Using FTP may have corrupted the extensions, and they may have to be
repaired or re-installed.

OK so we restored from backup and all is working.
I tried using "import" from the ftp and get an error when publishing to a
folder:
Server error: The URL'_borders/_vti_cnf is invalid

DO NOT USE FTP!
That cannot be emphasised enough. FTP will corrupt the extensions.
To get the theme, navigation and borders the remote site must be
PUBLISHED to the PC. Import will never get the navigation, theme
files, or shared border files.

Finally, DO NOT USE FTP.
