Help with Connectors

Dear all
I am new to visio so please bear with me. I have spent ages on a diagram and
am trying to connect my objects up.
However when I connect two objects they are joined with an "L" shape. When I
try then to move this around as needed (it is a computer network diagram
with many interconnects) the L shape always snaps to a straight diagonal
line between the two objects. TRhis is not what I want. I have never seen
this before and I can't find anywhere to change the properties.
When I copy the shapes to a new drawing and try to connect they still
exhibit this behaviour.
Any ideas, I;m getting desperate

if at v2003 go to shapes => layout shapes and select connector styles as a
start
