help with error

I am trying to open a file with the extensin of .wmf and I keep getting an
conversion file error with a whole bunch of weird characters..what is
causing this and how do I fix it ? I am also getting the same error on the
same file with a .jpg extension on it ?? how do I fix that ? Tks.

DepDir: These are graphic files. You cannot open them from Word. However,
you can view them from or use them in Word docs. From a blank doc, Try
Insert-Picture, From file and double-click any of these graphics.
