Help with installation

I am having issues with the installing Project 2007 trail from the website. I
have purchased a copy of Project 2007 professional through my job's home use
program, and Microsoft says they won't be able to deliver it to me until
around July 21st. So I downloaded a trial version for the time being so that
I can do my homework assignment. It won't let me get past the configuration
phase, I've tried everything I could think of (or understand from research)
for almost a week. It gives me an error about not having enough memory, after
attempting to set up three or four times. I have 2GB's of RAM on my Vista
laptop and it's never used more than half of the RAM. I've googled the
problem, and from what I can understand I need to change something in my
registry in order for this program to work. I also heard that a program
called subinACL could help solve my problems, but I've downloded the program
and I don't know the next step. I'm a bit apprehensive about doing this,
because I'm not experienced with this at all. Can someone help me make sense
of this editing the registry thing because I need this for my homework that
is due on 7/7/08. I've read all the links on the MVP wbsite and to be honest
they don't help. It's crazy not to be able to get support from MS for
installation of trials versions. I don't need full support just help getting
it running! Someone please help!

Hacking around with the registry is dangerous and shouldn't really be
attempted by those who don't know what they are doing. If you are going
to do it, then you should back up your entire system first.

The problem with support is that the problem may be caused by something
on the laptop such as other programs which may or may not be Microsoft
and accordingly it may be difficult to diagnose.

Are there any superfluous programs, applications or services running?

The simplest thing to start with may well be to remove any unwanted
programs by uninstalling them. Then stop any unnecessary programs from
running when you want to attempt the install by looking at the task list.

This will give you the maximum amount of free memory and should help.

Do you have the right privileges to be able to install this?

Thanks, for your reply. I understand that I shouldn't mess with the registry,
that's why I'm asking for assistance. I have shut down the unessessary
programs and processes to the point where there was 70% free memory. Still
the same error. Just how much does this program need, the requirements call
for way less? I've even adjusted the virtual memory to make that larger. I am
the system administrator so I should have the priviliges to install. I've
looked on the properties tab and seen that I have full control over the
program, so why can't I execute it? What else is required?

I think it is unacceptable that this problem has been around for so long and
there was nothing done about this with the release of the service pack. How
do I try out a product if I can't install? A program this expensive shouldn't
be this hard to install or be this hard to gain access to.

Excuse me for the rant, but I have been at this for a while and still can't
understand what I need to do to get this to work. I'm afraid I'll fail my
class all because of this installation issue.

Well the cost of the program need bear no relation to how easy it is to
install. That ease depends on the complexity and sophistication of the
program and its configuration.

I've installed this on a very modest laptop which is several years old
and which consequently is probably of a lower specification than yours
so it isn't intrinsically difficult to install.

I think the subinACL solution is very hacky and I would be reluctant to
try it (as somebody who is familiar with directly modifying registry
keys). It doesn't seem to get to the root cause of the failure.

I think I would probably try to repair/reinstall other elements of the
Office suite. I often find that when these problems start to arise a
complete reinstall is the only thing that gives peace of mind.

Hi Nikz,

I would recommend the following.

1. Download a fresh copy of the trial version and install. Make sure you
delete all temp files / cookies. This will negate the possibility of corrupt
installation media.

2. To install the application on any machine you need to ensure you are
logged into the machine with admininistrative rights to be able to install
applications.

Cheers,

Hi Gordon,
Thanks for your reply. I have success at last! I made a HUGE mistake by
downloading the subinACL, it totally screwed up my registry. Vista would not
recognize me as the administator, or edit the registry, it said access wasn't
allowed. Regisrty cleaners wouldn't even work at this point. It wouldn't even
allow me to back up info normally I had to back up my documents on-line. Then
I did a reinstall of the OS. This time I did all the updates first, and
allowed the SP1 to run through. Afterwards I installed my MS Office
Enterprise Suite CD and the MS Project Trial. Then I let those updates to
run, set up outlook, and now it's ups and running! I'm so happy I don't know
what to do! That whole process took the better part of yesterday all the way
up until now, but it's finally done. Thanks for all of you guys help, and
sorry again for the rant.
My suggestion for anyone having this problem is to uninstall all MS Office
products then reinstall. Hopefully you won't have to go through the painful
task of backing up and reinstalling your OS from scratch like I had to.
Thanks again for all of your suggestions.
