Help with OCR & Scanning B& W Forms to fill out

C

Chad Harris

I just want to scan a simple multipaged black and white form so I can type
answers to the questions. I also wonder if there is a way to put checkmarks
in the squares (not on a standard keyboard).

I'm trying to sort out these choices from the scanner

I am bewildered and need help with the wide number of choices for scanning
a document and it shows in my lack of success or clumsy scanning ( a simple
form I want to fill out with questions and spaces) using MOS 2003 Pro and
Omni Page Pro 12. I haven't been very successful so far. I'm sure some of
these choices overlap or may be the same.

But I'm hoping someone will sort out these options for a relative beginner
(and wonder if I should venture into Infopath to modify a form and would do
better--probably not).

I'm trying to sorty out and differentiate between using these options and
their corresponding "wizards." I'm trying to figure out which would be the
easiest to use with a simple form and also of the items I list which might
be necessary to use concomittantly. On the OPP 12 Toolbar:

1) Omni Page Pro 12 "1-2-3"
2) OCR Wizard
3) Scan B&W
4) Perform OCR
5) Automatic
6) Copy to Clipboard (Paste in Word or Excel) or perhaps export them
7) The Options under Process on the OPP 12 Toolbar

From MOS 2003 Tools: (the different reaons for these two)

1) Microsoft Office Document *Imaging*
2) Microsoft Office Document *Scanning*

I have an HP 5300C Scan Jet (probably much slower than their newest--my main
compalint):

When I press the scan button there are these choices to reconcile with Omni
Page Pro and the two MOS 2003 Scan and Image tools:

1) HP Precision Scan
2) Scan Jet Copy Utility
3) Omni Page Pro 12.0

If I choose HP Precision Scan, I have the choices to scan to

1) Image file
2) Internet File
3) Word
4) Omni Page Pro

also Outlook and PP, Photoshop ect. which don't figure in here.

Also, there seems to be so much revision necessary, and I know that although
in 14 Scansoft boasts that "Accuracy is increased approximately 35% with
significant improvements for the processing of degraded images,"
http://www.scansoft.com/omnipage/whatsnew.asp that I have to revise way too
much in 12 and my friend says he has to revise way too much using 14. I am
working my way through OPP's Help, and am sure that on the Scansoft site and
the web tutorials abound.

If someone can give me a little simple steering with these choices, and the
wizard choices on the OPP toolbar, with reference to when and whether
pasting the scanned form into Word would help to possibly increase your
editing tools, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Chad Harris

You will need to use the OCR option in order for you to enter anything on
the form. Check the Help files for assistance.

Thanks for narrowing it Milly. How about putting checks in boxes (I
suppose you can try to get an X to fit) and what seems difficult is a form
with different shaped and sized boxes made by lines that are like a jig-saw
puzzle grid. By difficult I mean that when you use an OCR option, it is
hard to type within those boxes and the lines interfere with your typing.
Maybe I need to hit help on the grid or does it ever help just to scan into
Word or Excel?
