Help with page layout in Word?

Al Cunniff

I've done a bit of desktop publishing and page layout
using programs devoted to those purposes, but now I need
to learn how to do some simple page layout in Word.
(It must be done in Word so that others in my office
can collaborate on this doc.)

I need some advice/help as I struggle to place an image
in a particular spot, to make type flow around that image,
etc.

If someone here can take a few minutes to advise me, I can
email you directly, or I can try to post the main hurdles
I'm facing.

Thanks in advance,
-Al

Mark (and others?)--thanks!

Here's what our newsletter page needs to look like:

Imagine a 3-column grid, where column #1 (the column at far left)
starts in the upper left corner and runs down about 8 inches.
This will be a text box with a rule around it.

To the right of this box, at the top of the page, centered in the
two-column space will be a company logo and text for contact info.

Under that, in a 2-column width, will be the main text of the
newsletter. It flows down the page and in the lower left wraps
under the text box in the first column (remember, it ran down
only about 8 inches). This means that at the bottom of the page,
the text actually runs across all 3 columns.

That's it!

The biggest problems I've had in trying to make this happen
in Word have been:

-When I place a text block near the logo, one element or the
other is bumped out of the way. (Apparently one has an
auto-runaround feature enabled?)

-I can't get smooth, precise movements when I shift the elements.
There's seems to be an invisible snap-to grid that's set in
wide increments.

Yes, there is a grid. On the draw menu, click on grid and turn off "snap
objects to grid" and possibly "snap objects to other objects" (although
sometimes the grid is very useful).
