Help with resource allocation...

Abo

Say I have two tasks as follows:

1. Build racing car From: 02 Nov 2009 to 23 Jun 2010 By: Jim
2. Build speed boat From: 02 Nov 2009 to 01 Mar 2010 By: Fred

Fred also can build racing cars, so I'd like him to work 100% on task 2
to finish his speed boat, and then join Jim on Task 1 on 02 Mar 2010 to
help Jim finish the task.

Can someone please help me and tell me how to assign the resources like
this, in MSP2007?

Thanks

Hi Abo,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

From the Gantt Chart, click Window/Split. Select the Racing Car task, and
then right click in the bottom pane and select Resource Schedule. Enter the
amount of work you want Fred to do and enter in the Delay column the 4
months of work required to complete his boat task. Alternatively, you can
enter his work requirement in one of the Usage views.

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Spot on, used the first method and it worked as you say :)

Should the speed boat task slip, I'm guessing that the race car task
won't be affected but the resource graph will show an overallocation? Is
there a way to automatically slip the race car task without adding a
dependency? The two tasks aren't dependent, other than they share a
resource? Or is it just something to be mindful of to resolve manually
when I update those tasks?

You're welcome, Abo :)

I can't think of a way to sensibly link them, so I suggest you set it up
using my first method and update it using the second.

Abo,

I would use a split screen and apply the "Resource Schedule" view to the
lower pane, now apply a delay to Fred's assignment on the 1st task setting
the start and finish dates accordingly.
