Help with table margins

J

Justin

This maybe the wrong group, but I figure you guys are great with Word,
so maybe you can help. I have a table with a border on the top and
the bottom. I want the text in the top cell to almost touch the
border line, but I can't get it close. Even with all margins set to
0, its still pretty far away. Any ideas on how I can get the text
almost on top of the top border?

There's a finite distance between the top of the text characters and the top
of the space occupied by the font that you cannot eliminate. The best you
might be able to achieve if the zero margins are too large is to put the
text in a borderless text box with no background fill and overlay it across
the table.

An alternative solution would be to raise the text via the Font dialog box >
Character Spacing tab > Position.

That was my first thought. Unfortunately it will not allow the top of the
font to get any closer to the border of the cell. It merely adds space below
the text in the cell.

You are absolutely right. My mistake that I did not test it now (I would
normally have done so but I was so sure I had used the solution in a table
beforehand - obviously, I was wrong.).

Another solution that may be OK if the paragraphs that are to be forced
upwards consist of one line only: set the line spacing of the paragraph to
an exact amount smaller than the font size - how much smaller depends on the
font and the font size (this time, I tested - and it works here ;-)). The
space after the paragraph could be adjusted as required.

Nothing elaborate here but this will get your text right up to that line:
make sure your Paragraph After is 0 then set your text to be a superscript,
adjust the font size to whatever font you need and that will do the trick.
I'm looking at an example of that right now and the text is just a smidgen
away from the top border. If you had needed the bottom one to be close, just
the opposite, set your text to be a subscript and adjust font size setting.

Ooops - I meant Paragraph Before is 0 then all that other stuff. It's a
bandaid approach but it works.
