Help with Table of Contents

I am trying to customize the table of contents I just inserted into a word doc. It insists on picking up Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3. I am interested in going only as far as 2 on this document and 1 on a bunch of others. In word 2003 for windows, this was easily done. I can find no obvious way to do that in Word 08 for mac. Is it possible or was this incredibly useful feature left out?

How did you do it in Word 2003?

Insert | Index and Tables | Table of Contents, change "show levels" to 2
(or 1) works here, and also works in WinWord, I'm pretty sure.

If you edited the field code in Word 2003, say so--we'll help you out
with that.

Interesting. When I first inserted the table in Mac 08, all I could access was the top bar. After reading your message, i clicked on the insert table command and the screen I was used to seeing that allowed me to adjust the depth of the table of contents. For the record, the other way to do it is to toggle the fields, adjust the range there, and then toggle back and update the fields (I figured that out by accident btw).

Once again you've been a great help. A suggestion? There is simply no way to find help on this in "help" or online. There also is no other forum thread on this topic that i could find. Help only tells you how to insert a table of contents (a pretty obvious thing to do).

Cheers and thanks again

Glad you sorted it. I had forgotten there is the new method to enter a
TOC, which hides many of the options. Incidentally, there is a master
tutorial on customizing the TOC here, if you are interested. More than
you ever knew you could do. :)

About Help--the Help is unfinished, but since much of it is stored
online now, it will be added to over time. At the end of each topic, you
can click on Yes/No/Somewhat to offer feedback per topic, that goes
straight to MS and helps set the priority for what gets added first.

The search on the forum is currently broken--but the officeformac forum
currently only has 6 weeks of archives anyhow. Google has a bigger archive:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.mac.office.word/topics
It's the same forum, many different ways to access it.

Ask as many questions as you need to, certainly while other options are
dysfunctional.
