Help with updates

I'm using Windows 2000, and decided I would check to see if my Outlook
2003 needed any updates. It found Outlook Collaboration Data Objects
Update as a critical update. But when I clicked to install it, I get a
window that says:

This machine does not have the MS Outlook Email Security Update
installed. Please install the MS Outlook Email Security Update before
running the CD0 1.21 Email Security Update.

I've searched on the web and on the MS webiste/help for anything
about this and found nothing. I don't understand what I am supposed
to do...it's like it's telling me I need another update, but I
thought that's what I was doing...?!? It's not telling me how to get
the update that I need to do the update. Arggg. Am I really that stupid
or do these things just not make sense sometimes....

You do not need that update. It's for Outlook 98/2000. Just ignore it.

Why does it say it's a critical update then? In the future how will I
know which ones I need and which ones I don't?

I don't have any information about why you might be encountering that situation. In general, if you look at the details page for an update and it's not for the version of Office you have, you should just ignore it. Microsoft is working to make the update process easier. The situation you encountered is pretty rare.
