Hi,

I would try cleaning out the preferences files as a first pass at a
fix. Make a folder to back up these files then go into /Users/(your
user name)/Library/Preferences/ and move out:

com.microsoft.office.plist
com.microsoft.Powerpoint.plist
com.microsoft.Excel.plist
com.microsoft.Entourage.plist
com.microsoft.Word.plist

Then try restarting Excel (a new preferences file will be created in
the original directory theoretically). Hopefully that will resolve
your problem. If one of the preferences files gets corrupted it can
cause all kinds of problems launching the program (I had this happen
in Office 2004 a few times).

Hope that helps,

Neil

Eleanore,

Did you try reinstalling Office?

Sorry, but why can't you get to Preferences? It's not in Word, it's a
directory on your computer. Search for each of the individual files I
listed using spotlight - you can find them that way if you prefer.

You are a teacher and you call that feedback. What are we supposed to get
from that other than you are unhappy. If you want help you need to give us
details.

You might need to download the combo updater from Apple and run it again
rather than using Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files. Several users have reported this fixed some odd
problems they were having with Office. Combo updaters will install on the
same version as they¹re applying‹no need to roll back or do a clean install.

Tiger:

Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (PPC)

Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (Intel)

<http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411updateintel.html>

In addition, you might need to use "Remove Office" and reinstall Office from
your CD then update.
