Hi Tawana--
I don't know which version of Word or which scanner you're using, but
Office 2000, XP, and 2003 come with a document scanning feature that uses
OCR (most every scanner has some degree of Optical Character Recognition)
that uses OCR to scan directly into Word. OCR is the technology that allows
you to transform paper documents in editable computer files. Using OCR, the
scanner attempts to recognize the characters in the document and produce a
text file which can then be edited. Keep in mind that it is not 100%
accurate.
If you have Office XP, there is also a Microsoft Office Document Scanning
Feature that you can custom install from the Office CD by going to Microsoft
Office Tools (a component of MSOT not in Office 2000). Newer OCR will also
handle text and image scanning at the same time. The first link shows how
to do this using a garden variety HP scanner. OCR software like Omni Page
Pro has many more features.
