HELP!

S

Scott Ellner

I work at NASA Ames Research Center in California. I have
a Mac G4 computer with OS 9.0.4 & Office 98. For several
months now I along with some of my colleagues have been
experiencing recurrent application problems. In my case it
appears to happen most often with Word, but has also
occurred with Excel, MacDraw, Eudora & Netscape. A typical
example of what happens is I attempt to open a Word file
usually from within the application, the application quits
& a window pops up with the following error message, "The
application "Microsoft Word" has unexpectedly quit because
of an error of type [usually 2 or 3, but sometimes type 1,
etc.] occurred. You should save your work on other open
applications and restart the computer". Sometimes & I
restart & sometimes I don't. Sometimes the problem goes
away, sometimes not. Frequently when this happens my
computer just locks up on me leaving me with no other
recourse but to reboot. Of course we have an IT support
group here, but they have been unable to figure out what
the problem is & fix it & have basically given up on it.
I've had a clean install performed, run Norton utilities on
numerous occassions & performed Office updates with little
or no apparent improvement. Sometimes I transfer Word
files between my PC at home & my Mac at work. I thought
for a time that this might have something to do with the
problem. However, I have opened new Word files on my Mac
without any connection to those from my PC & have still had
problems. I'm really at my wits end with this, but I don't
know where to turn for help. I'd like to call MS directly
but can't seem to find a technical support number to call
without a charge. Maybe some kind soul out there could at
least point me in a direction where I can find help.
Appreciatively, Scott
