help!

Jerome Ferrance

Apparently Microsoft itself takes no responsibility for the
software it puts out, as I have been sent in the same
infinite loop looking for help on their website only to
find out that there is no help out there from them.

My Word 2002 has always had problems, but today it sent me
to a page with updates to fix the problems. I ran the
Service Packs 1 and 2 Updates for Office, and now I cannot
open any files in Word, those I created before, or the new
ones I create now.

Exactly how do I undo whatever it was that the service
packs decided to do to my software so that I can get back
into the documents I need.

How do we let other people know not to download and run
these updates, which apparently fix the other problems by
not letting you use the software any longer?

Am going to restore system to before service packs were
installed. Hope this will fix the current problem, but
still searching here for the solution to the initial problem.

I see a lot of people have problems of this same sort.

Hi Jerome,

If you read the replies to the other posts you read you'd find the
culprit here is Norton AV. :)

The macro virus scanning option in Norton is cause of the inability to
open files after applying the Service Pack. To rectify go to Norton
Options, select the Miscellaneous section and disable the "Office
Plug-in" option. Note you will still be protected by Norton's
AutoProtect layer.

Was so hopeful after reading your message. But I have
disabled the Office plug-in option and rebooted and am
still unable to access any files after opening Word -- or

Hi Carol,

What is the exact error message you are encountering and how are you
trying to open the files? Are you using File/Open or using a
double-click method in an Exploring windows such as My Computer or the
Desktop?

Additionally what version of Word are you using and what patches do
you have installed?

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

Beth --
I've tried opening Word in many ways. If I double click
on the file name, I get the message ..
filename is locked for editing by 'another user'
If I then ask it to read only, it tells me ...
the document name or path is not valid.
If I open Word from Programs in the Start menu and create
a document and then try to save it, it tells me ...,
Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission
error.
Using Word2000(9.0.6926 SP-3)
Have been for years. Problem showed up after having hadm
MSBlaster and downloading updates for Windows2000,
Office2000, and Norton. Have installed all patches and
updates available for Win2000 and Office and Access from
Microsoft.
Many thanks for your help.

Yes, I did disable the Plug-in, rebooted, and still
getting "filename is locked for editing" messages.
