Good day. I have been using Excel 2002 for several months
now and up until early last night all was well. When I
tried to start Excel last night, I got the following;

Excel has caused a General Protection Fault in Module
USER.EXE @ 000c:00000108

I then tried to reboot and then got an error message that
my machine was "Dangerously low on resources, and did I
want to stop Excel?"

Both of these errors hang up my machine and the only way
out is to reboot.

After rebooting a few times I found that the two error
messages listed above alternate with each reboot.

I tried running the Error Detect on the installation CD
for Office XP, with no change in results. I then
uninstalled the whole Office XP package, rebooted and
reinstalled the whole package with still no change in
results. I am running Windows ME on my machine.

I then turned to Dell support and after 5 hours on the
phone with three different techs, I have done everything
possible except reformat the hard drive. I did that 8
months ago for a virus and I never want to go through that
again.

Yes, I have Norton Anti-Virus 2003 and it says my machine
is virus free. I even went to Symantec.com and ran their
Security and Virus checks only to find that my machine is
virus free.

All of my other applications work. Word and Publisher
work fine. Excel is the only program that has a problem.
One of the Dell techs told me that the error message about
the protection fault deals with privileges, but then he
said that if I was able to burn a CD and use the internet,
all was well with the privileges, which I can do. I ran a
backup to a DVD+R just after this problem started
happening.

I have even restored my system back to last Thursday and
that did not change anything.

Sorry to be so long-winded, but I am trying to give all
the details that I can.

In the event that I lose internet access, please respond
directly to my email address (e-mail address removed) if you
have an answer to this issue.

Thanks, Danno...

Hi Dan,

I guess your toolbar customisation file is damaged.

Check out these tips:

This is a default list of things-to-do when Excel exhibits startup
problems.

Try opening Excel without any addins or hidden workbooks:

Start, Run,
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /Automation

Quotes mandatory, Note you may have to change the path.

If your error disappears, there is either an add-in or a (hidden)
workbook that is loaded upon XL's start, which bothers you.

- Try locating the XLSTART directory, move everything from there.
- In XL: Tools, Addins, note the ones checked and uncheck them one at
the time, each time restarting XL
- In XL, Tools, options, general. Check if a path is entered after
"Alternate startup file location". Clear it.

Another option is to open XL in Safe mode:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /Safe

Also, you might try:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /Regserver

Yet another possible problem is a corruption of your toolbar
customisation file. Locate all files with extension .xlb and rename the
extension(s) to something like .old
Now try and start XL again.

Also, NAV has shown to cause "Excel caused an invalid page
fault in module VBE6.DLL".
You might try disabling the Office plug in of NAV.

Other causes may be a full TEMP folder:

In Windows 95/98 and ME

Delete all files in C:\Windows\Temp

In Windows NT/2000/XP

Find and Select C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\local settings\temp
and delete all files in there.

They are often left behind by installing programs but Excel needs the
space.

This is what MS has to say about startup problems:

And this about startup switches:

After making my initial post this morning, I searched
through the newsgroup and found your default list of
things-to-do. I tried some of the suggestions, but was so
tired and so frustrated, that I did not finish. this
morning I tried the xlb rename and IT WORKED!!!

I should have come to the newsgroup first and will in the
future.

Thanks, Danno...
