Hidden change on opening a document

Hi,
since yesterday all older .xls(x) I open are immediately shown dirty and
Excel asks to save changes (I didn't make) when I close them again. This
does not happen for files created yesterday.

I did not change any preferences yesterday, and the last update is a
while back as well, but something must have happened that Excel 2008 now
thinks has to be set right in all documents. Where to look?

Guess I'll try overwriting all preferences with thursday's backup.

Surprisingly that didn't help. What could it be?

Additional to Bob G's comments I believe there are some other functions that
operate similarly (such as TODAY()). How about links?

That was my first thought, but no. And after saving once re-opening will
no longer dirty the file, so it's likely some setting. I looked into the
system localization pane but nothing's changed there.
