Hidden columns and formulas

Is this a riddle? How do you select a cell if it's hidden?
I hide column D then I type (never clicked or "selected")
in cell F1 =D1+E1 and the result was correct and column D
never came "unhidden" at any time. Try typing, never
selecting.
