Hide Directories

I know I can hide directories by adding an underscore to the directory name
and this will keep it from being indexed by FP.

Is there another way to do this that does not require adding the underscore?
My web provider include a stats directory and when I go to post my web site
FP will time out trying to index the files.

The only option here is to see if you or the host can convert the stat
folder into a subweb or if the host is willing to move the folder above the
web root and give you FTP access to it.
