Hide Spelling and Grammer Errors Off By Default?

SOMEBODY HELP ME WITH THIS. I've been using Word since
2.0, and have extensive experience configuring it, writing
complex macros, etc. This issue is driving me absolutely
batty.

I want to configure Office XP to configure spelling and
grammar to be hidden with each new document. I thought I
had it by opening the normal.dot template and setting that
configuration there, but nope. Looked for a registry key.
Nope. Checked google groups. Nope.

I REALLY hate having to set 'hide spelling errors'
and 'hide grammar errors' each time I create a new
document. I want silent checking.

I suppose I could write a macro, and add that to the
template -- but then whenever I distributed the document,
everybody in my security-conscious company would get
the 'disable macros' notification. Bad idea.

If you just don't want them marked, then clear the "Check spelling as you
type" and "Check grammar as you type" boxes on the Spelling & Grammar tab of
Tools | Options. This will affect all documents ("Hide spelling/grammar
errors" is a per-document setting). Spelling and grammar errors will not be
marked, but you will still be able to run the spelling or grammar checks
manually. If you don't want Word to judge your spelling or grammar at all,
you can check the box for "Do not check spelling or grammar" in Tools |
Language | Set Language and click the Default... button.

"Hide spelling/grammar errors in this document" is, as the wording implies,
a per-document setting. If you want it to apply to all newly created
documents, you'll need to change the setting in Normal.dot itself (see
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm), and this will
not affect existing documents. Perhaps you are confusing this with the
"Check spelling/grammar as you type" settings? These *are* global.
