Hide Spelling Errors Option Grayed Out (with it checked)

Hi

When I started using Word one day, I got the error message that the custom dictionary wasn't available. I fixed that error and never received the pop-up again. Unfortunately, I never saw the red underline that I am accustomed to see in Word for spelling errors. I saw green lines for grammar but not red lines. When I looked in preferences, I saw that 'Hide spelling errors in this document' was checked and grayed so I could not alter it. This has affected my subsequent documents. Every document has the spelling errors hidden and I cannot change that. What should I do? I'm thinking of uninstalling and reinstalling Office because I accidentally altered the contents of the Office folder, but if this pops up in the future, and I don't want to do that, what should I do?

Thank you for your time

See the help topic " Turn off automatic spelling checking".

This setting is held in your Preferences: uninstalling/reinstalling will
have no effect.

Further to what John wrote, the "Hide spelling errors..." box remains
dimmed, checked & unchangeable as long as there is no check in the box above
it for "Check spelling as you type".
