hiding column xl-97

Have a spreadsheet that I am using as a database with
columns thru ai. Successfully hidden all I wanted (going
backward) until I get to J or K. When I right click and
ask to hide, it takes out all of the rest of the columns
backwards thru A. In other words, instead of hiding it,
it erases everything prior to it. I cannot hide just J or
K. I have clicked the column headers to make sure they
are even (double click on black plus sign). Don't know
what else to do.

This often happens if you have a merged cell that spans
the range in question. If you don't select the column and
instead select just one cell in the column, and
format|column|hide you can work around the merged cell
