Hiding Documents from Templates

When I am creating a new document in Word (2003) and look at the templates on
my computer, it is showing all the documents in the folder and not just the
templates (!!!).

How do I get the template list to only show templates.

(Our network administrator has set the templates path to be H:\, which also
matches our My documents path. We cannot change the path settings ourselves
due to security restrictions, but my thinking is that there must be a way of
making a section for templates actually show templates!)

Tell your IT support staff member responsible for this faux pas that the
User Documents folder, the User Templates folder and the Word Startup folder
must all be separate locations. It cannot work as intended if they all share
the same location.

Thanks for the response.

I have been in discussion with our tech support for several years over this
and some other changes (e.g. print button on the toolbox to be "print ...")
but as usual it does not get done. The next build of the stations will be
next august :-(

I have always been able to filter by filetype when opening files, it just
seems a strange ommision if I cannot do the same when looking for templates.
Is it possible to turn off that side panel thing and return to the file...new
of Word 2000?

and replace the New button on the standard toolbar with File New Dialog
(tools > customize > all commands) provided the IT department is not so anal
as to have locked this down (but from your comment about Print it appears
they may have). Word really cannot be used properly if you cannot save
customisations to your personal normal.dot file (You cannot share the
Normal.dot file among multiple users in Word

When raising this issue with management, you could point out that such
restrictions are only in place to save the support staff from actually
supporting and that productivity is impaired by having to work around it.
Poor IT support is arguably worse than no IT support.

Thanks for your reply ... and whilst I agree with your assertions about IT
support I am stunned that Word will not work with shared normal.dot. In a
school environment that is an essential since so many option in Word make it
unusable if poorly set (changed by immarture/inexperienced users). The only
sensible way would be to use normal dot on the local c drive so that it
cannot be changed and is available for the next user.

The usual workaround is to replace the user's normal.dot with a clean copy
when the user logs in.

Our public library uses an application called Deep Freeze, which stores
standard settings and configurations. Every time Windows is started, it
restores everything to the default.
