Hiding Header and Footer in Word 2004

In Word 2003 under Windows it is possible to hide the header and
footer in print layout view by clicking in the gap between pages to
hide or show white space. Is it possible to accomplish the same thing
in Word 2004?

No - Word 2004 doesn't have that "feature". Depending on why you want it you
might consider using Normal View instead.

You sound like you don't approve of this feature much.

I don't use it all the time but I like to use it on Windows when the
document has a lot of white space but I still get the benefits of the
print layout view. One other difference is that any comments appear as
'marginalia' rather than balloons and thus all of them are visible
rather than having to hover over each to review them.

With Word 2004 on the Mac I find normal view does not scroll as well
as page layout view when working with big documents so I tend to avoid
it. The availability of this view would give me the best of both
worlds.

Even as I wrote that last paragraph I think it seems counter-intuitive
but I have found page layout more responsive in the past. I will have
to check this out with the latest version to see if it still the same.

I would like the feature in MacWord myself--but it causes much confusion
among people who don't understand why the headers vanished. It's too
easy to invoke accidentally.

You can use Help | Send Feedback in Word to request it, though.

Page Layout scrolling better than Normal View does sound weird. You
might start a new post if that continues to be your finding--scrolling
in MacWord has been a bit iffy but I believe it's improved over the
various updates.

Quickest of all, of course, are the Page Down and Page Up keys (strictly
speaking, "visible page").

Not at all - It isn't the *feature* itself that bothers me. But for exactly
the reasons Daiya expressed I find it to be an easlily invoked source of
confusion & dismay for quite a few users. Accidently clicking the top/bottom
edge of a "page" happens quite frequently.
